“Real Grand Expression”: Sound, touch, pedals–perfectly integrated to give you the sensation of playing a grand piano.
Real Grand Expression. This phrase defines the expressive capability of Clavinova. It is not only the full realization of the sound, the touch and the pedals, but the application of technologies nurtured by crafting acoustic pianos to perfectly integrate these three elements into a single piano. This piano produces the exact sound you want through the touch of the keys and the feel of the pedals. As you play, you will truly feel as though you are playing a grand piano.
The sound of some of the finest concert grand pianos in the world
With two world-renowned concert grand pianos available at the touch of a button, the CLP Series lets you choose the perfect piano tone for the music you want to play. Offering far more than just sampled sounds, the CLP-885 Clavinova reproduces the Yamaha CFX concert grand and the legendary Bӧsendorfer Imperial in meticulous detail.
VRM physical modelling – the distinctive reverberation generated by the entire body of a concert grand piano
In a grand piano, sound resonates throughout the body of the instrument, producing a rich reverberation that envelops the listener in sound. Through enhanced Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM), the Clavinova reproduces this phenomenon perfectly. The original VRM calculates the various states of the strings for each of the 88 notes on the keyboard, from one instant to the next, and timing and depth of damper pedals pressed. The enhanced VRM now also calculates aliquot resonance in the upper octaves, and the full resonance of the soundboard, rim, and frame. This technology allows for vivid, bright, richly-varied expression that reflects the limitless number of factors inherent in piano performance.
Smooth tonal transformations perfectly matched to key pressure
Pianists can change the volume of the sound—as well as its dynamics—to achieve both mellow and bright tones by simply changing the pressure they apply to the keys.
The Yamaha CLP-885 Clavinova features long, carefully-sampled recordings of notes on a piano. Because it reproduces them in rich detail and utilizes unique Yamaha technologies, it can achieve smooth tonal transitions in response to the touch of the player.
From staccato to legato—superbly expressive sound that responds to the player’s touch
Featuring Yamaha Smooth Release technology, CLP-885 offers the crisp tone heard when playing staccato as well as the lingering sound produced by releasing the keys slowly. This provides a finely-nuanced response to the pianist’s playing.
256-note polyphony:
Play many notes simultaneously without any unwanted dropped notes.
Key-Off samples
Subtle changes occur in a grand piano’s tone the moment a pianist’s fingers are lifted from the keys. The damper being lowered onto the strings to mute its sound is what causes this. Key-Off samples features actual recordings of these changes, offering a faithful reproduction of the most subtle changes in the piano’s sound, allowing for a more realistic performance.
Superb playability and feel
GrandTouch linear graded hammer keyboard with Counterweighted Wooden Keys
Yamaha’s latest Linear Graded Hammer wooden keyboard action features a broad dynamic range and faithful response to every nuance of touch. This puts a wide expanse of tone—from delicate to bold—at the pianist’s fingertips. The highly consistent grand piano hammers replicate the pleasing response felt when the hammers strike the strings, enabling precise control of the tone.
Highly absorbent synthetic-ivory white keys and synthetic-ebony black keys prevent slipping even during extended play and feel just like those of a grand piano.
Synthetic ivory keytops – a pleasure to play even after hours of performance
Our fingers are more sensitive than we think, and for pianists, the texture of the piano keys is extremely important. The GrandTouch-S keyboard features white keys made from the highest quality synthetic ivory, developed independently by Yamaha. Also, the black keys are finished in synthetic ebony. Synthetic ivory keytops reproduce the tactile surface of the real ivory keyboards once used in older acoustic pianos. It features highly absorbent material that prevents fingers from slipping even after hours of practice, while retaining the ideal texture and feel. Resulting from well over a century of experience in making acoustic pianos, this exclusive Yamaha technology achieves a finish that feels natural and comfortable. In addition to the feel, the appearance and fine texture of these keys is unmatched by any other digital piano. So, pianists will be inspired from the moment they experience it.
Escapement mechanism of Clavinova Keyboards
The escapement mechanism in a grand piano moves the hammers away from the strings quickly after they strike them. This is in order to prevent any interference with string vibration. Pressing the keys gently causes this mechanism to produce a slight clicking sensation. Since Real Grand Expression offers players superb sound, touch and pedaling, we decided to create an escapement that delivers outstanding playability, repetition, and response without impeding performance. The Clavinova keyboards feature an escapement mechanism that reproduces this sensation near the bottom of the key dip. They have been designed in such a way that the click is discernible only on the lightest keystrokes, similar to the keyboard of a grand piano. These keyboards have been adjusted to provide additional friction that balances key repetition and response without impeding performance.
Keyboard Stabilizers—unique Yamaha mechanisms for improved keyboard stability and durability
Keyboards fulfill the vital role of transforming emotion from your fingertips into sound. Therefore, they must be smooth to play in order to maintain superb touch for prolonged performances. That is why Yamaha has fitted Keyboard Stabilizers to all 88 keys, offering players a natural touch and improving the stability and durability of the keyboard.
Natural feel, even on the back-end of the keys
The counterweighted keys on the CLP-885 are constructed so that the support point hidden inside the instrument body is as far from the key tip as possible. In doing so, this improves playability and comfort – even deep on the back of the key. Clavinova key tips are far from the fulcrum, so the keys sink smoothly when played near the base.
This construction provides good key travel, even when performing pieces played mainly on the black keys and the backs of the white keys, allowing nuanced variations in touch and broadening your expressive range.
GrandTouch pedals
The pianist controls the pedals to add expression to the music, and makes frequent fine adjustments to how deeply they depress them in order to create the envisioned sound.
On a grand piano, pedaling requires more force when depressing the pedal, with the pedal feeling lighter on the return. This is because lifting a heavy damper requires more power than lowering it. GrandTouch pedals differ significantly from those in previous CLP Series pianos in that they replicate not only the resistance on the toes when the pedals are depressed, but also how that resistance lessens as the pianist returns the pedals to their original positions, a telltale physical property of grand piano pedals. This enables more precise pedaling and subtler changes in tonal expression, not only when depressing the pedals, but also by making it easier to hold the pedals in mid-stroke and control them as they slowly return to their original positions.
The CLP-885 also features a GP Response Damper that starts out light to the touch and grows heavier as it is depressed and the pedaling begins to take effect, just like on a grand piano. This gives players the physical feedback they need to master the delicate art of half-pedaling.
The mechanics of superior sound
Full-body resonance, just like an acoustic piano
Just like an acoustic piano, the Clavinova digital piano is carefully calibrated. With speaker positioning and body materials checked carefully, Yamaha ensure that the entire instrument resonates optimally. For a sound image that is very close to the grand piano, these instruments feature Tone Escapement in several locations throughout the body. This permits the sound from the speakers to be projected to the listener without being trapped inside the instrument.
Acoustic Optimizer—regulation to ensure a balanced tone
Having speakers attached to the body exhibits a phenomenon whereby the sound volume increases due to the body’s resonant frequency. Conversely, installing pipes with the same resonant frequency within the body suppresses this resonance. Yamaha’s acoustic optimizers utilize this phenomenon.
Yamaha‘s intimate knowledge of the internal acoustic characteristics of musical instruments is what makes this sound improvement possible.
Other features:
USB Audio Recorder
Record performances to USB flash memory and create audio files! So then you can save and play back on a computer, share with friends or even create a CD!
A fully immersive concert grand experience—even with headphones
Yamaha’s advanced binaural sampling technology is now available on the Clavinova for the first time. The technology uses samples from the CFX, Yamaha’s acclaimed concert grand piano & is recorded with specialized microphones. Locational information and minute nuances are precisely captured by these microphones. The resulting sound is so natural, so enveloping, that you’ll soon forget you’re even wearing headphones at all.
You can simply choose the Yamaha CFX Grand Voice and put your headphones on. The binaural sampled sound is then automatically ready, with no additional settings required! Now with or without headphones, you can fully enjoy the concert grand experience at home.
The Stereophonic Optimizer—a new kind of headphone experience
Using headphones, the Stereophonic Optimizer lets you enjoy the sound heard when you’re sitting in front of an acoustic piano. With the Stereophonic Optimizer, Voices sampled from acoustic pianos* appear to come from the body of the instrument. This provides a comfortable, natural experience that removes the drawbacks of performing with headphones.
